Abstract:

Diary of 1910 with printed cover "Department of the Interior, U.S. Indian Service" describes travels north from San Francisco to visit California Indians and speak with their chiefs, details about the Indians and their problems (alcohol, physical abuse, etc.) Indian agents, integration of whites and Indians in the schools, and incidents in Indian life. Areas around and between Calistoga, Eureka, Fresno, Clovis, Campo, Owens Lake, and other California towns are described in the context of Newton's Indian Service duties. The 1911 diary records her train travel schedule (mainly in the south and mid-west), expenditures, and visits to Indian schools and reservations. Contains frequent mention of Muskogee, Oklahoma.
